Shortly after her death, construction of the Taj Mahal India began in Agra, a city three hours from Delhi. It should be a tomb, like a love poem carved in stone. Building materials from all over India and large parts of Asia were brought in with 1,000 elephants. Twenty-eight different types of precious and semi-precious stones were used in the marble: the marble – only the best that the world had to offer. The architecture – as the world has never seen. Several architects merged Persian and Indian elements into an Indo-Islamic work of art. Over 20,000 artisans from many parts of South and Central Asia worked more than 17 years on the construction of the mausoleum. In 1648 Mumtaz Mahal’s last wish was fulfilled, but at what price ?
